Muscles & Joints
Muscles and joints: German supplements and what the labels may claim
Under EU law only certain nutrients carry authorised health claims for muscles and connective tissue. Magnesium and vitamin D contribute to normal muscle function, vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for normal cartilage function, and manganese contributes to normal connective tissue formation. Glucosamine, chondroitin and collagen carry no authorised EU claim and cannot be presented as treating joint problems.
This category collects supplements from German brands such as Doppelherz and Mivolis that are marketed around muscles, joints and connective tissue. The page explains what is actually permitted to be said about each ingredient, so you can read the labels critically before you buy.
What is in this category
- Magnesium: the nutrient with an authorised claim for normal muscle function, available as tablets, capsules, effervescent and direct sticks.
- Vitamin D: contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function and normal bones, often combined with calcium or K2.
- Vitamin C and manganese: vitamin C for normal collagen formation for normal cartilage function, manganese for normal connective tissue formation.
- Glucosamine and chondroitin: widely sold supplements with no authorised EU health claim, so no effect may be stated on the pack.
- Collagen preparations: powders, drinking ampoules and capsules, also without an authorised EU claim.
- Combination products: multi-ingredient formulas from brands such as Doppelherz and Mivolis, where only the qualifying nutrients may carry a claim.
How to read one of these labels
Look for the nutrient table with the NRV percentage. That tells you the actual dose per daily portion, which matters far more than the name on the front of the box. A product can be called a joint formula while containing a token amount of the one ingredient that legally justifies the claim.
Then check which sentence the manufacturer is allowed to print. If the pack talks about normal muscle function, that claim is coming from the magnesium or the vitamin D, not from the glucosamine. Supplements are not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle, the stated daily dose should not be exceeded, and they should be kept out of reach of small children. If you take prescription medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have an existing condition, speak to a doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Questions about muscle and joint supplements
Which nutrients are actually allowed to make a claim here?
Magnesium and vitamin D for normal muscle function, vitamin C for normal collagen formation for normal cartilage function, manganese for normal connective tissue formation, and calcium and vitamin D for the maintenance of normal bones. Those are the authorised EU claims in this area.
Does glucosamine work for joints?
No health claim for glucosamine is authorised in the EU, which is why no effect may be printed on the pack. The clinical evidence is mixed and contested. It is legal to sell and buy as a food supplement, but it cannot be presented as a treatment. Discuss ongoing joint pain with a doctor.
What about collagen supplements?
Same position. Collagen has no authorised EU health claim, so nothing about skin, joints or cartilage may be claimed on the label. Vitamin C is often added because it does carry an authorised claim for normal collagen formation.
When is the best time to take magnesium?
Timing is a matter of tolerance rather than effect. Many people take it with a meal because magnesium on an empty stomach can loosen the stool. Splitting a higher dose across the day is usually gentler than one large dose.
Can I take these alongside prescription medication?
Ask a doctor or pharmacist first. Minerals such as magnesium and calcium can affect the absorption of some medicines, including certain antibiotics and thyroid medication, and timing them apart is often recommended.
Do you ship supplements to the Gulf and the UK?
Yes, to more than 40 countries. Food supplements are subject to national import rules, so individual products may be restricted in some destinations. Cost and any import charges depend on the destination country.
Food supplements. Not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the stated daily dose. Keep out of reach of young children. This information does not replace medical advice. The labelling on the current packaging is binding.
